Paulo Ferreira has brought an end to his long international career.

The Chelsea right-back was originally called into the squad for his nation's two imminent Euro 2012 qualifiers but he confirmed to the Portuguese Football Federation yesterday (Monday) his wish to retire from representing his nation.

Ferreira made 62 appearances for Portugal, his debut in 2002 in a friendly against England at Villa Park.

He came on as a substitute in the Euro 2004 Final defeat by Greece when Portugal were the hosts and was again used as a sub in the World Cup matches in 2006.

By the Euro 2008 campaign that led to the quarter-finals he was first-choice left-back. He played one game at the World Cup in South Africa.
