CHELSEA TV EXCLUSIVE: GOURLAY ON STADIUM OPTIONS
With two days to go before the general meeting of Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) to consider Chelsea Football Club's proposal, chief executive Ron Gourlay spoke on Chelsea TV's Blues News about three sites for a potential new stadium.
In the interview which can be viewed in full here, Gourlay said:
'The key for me is that CPO shareholders and the fans need to understand and need to trust Roman Abramovich and the board. We are trying to do what is best for the football club and I think everyone will agree that up to now we have done a very good job and we have been very successful.
'We have looked at three sites and the doors are not shut on any of them. Not in any particular order there is Battersea and just east of Battersea there are a couple of sites down there that have the acreage that we require. There is White City which is complicated because for the land there are about seven owners, and there is Earl's Court.
'We would need to act quickly because two of the sites already have planning applications against them, the Battersea site and Earl's Court,' he revealed.
'Part of the process of buying back the freehold is to allow us to move quickly on the remaining sites should they become viable in the future before 2020.
'Our heritage is here in south-west London and that is where we want to stay. If we are going to move in the near future the key is to get a site as close as possible.
'I have the responsibility to fill the stadium and why would I want to move too far away and have to find 20,000 more to come in and lose 10,000 from here. It is important we stay close to Stamford Bridge.
'We all want to take the club forward and you have to look to the future. How do you get kids into the stadium? We have probably one of smallest family areas in the Premier League. We have to look at ways to get the new fans in and continue the success.
'I don't want to turn away thousands of people. I am not saying we would fill it if we had a 60,000 stadium tomorrow but I do know if we had one in the future we would fill it.'
