QUIET IN THE WINDOW
Andre Villas-Boas admits he does not expect too much more activity during the January transfer window.
We completed the signing of Gary Cahill almost a fortnight ago but despite speculation linking us to Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker Willian and KRC Genk winger Kevin De Bruyne, we have not yet added to the squad further.
Villas-Boas laid bare the club's situation with the Brazilian midfielder who plies his trade in Ukraine. 'Willian is a player that we have outlined as one of our potential targets but it doesn't seem viable, and neither what the team needs at the moment,' he explained. 'We have to wait and see. Every club protects themselves and I think it is fair that you have to judge the opposition in the league, based on what you want to achieve this year, and we are cup-tied in the Champions League. All these situations helped us make the best decision possible.
'There is much more common sense in what we are trying to do with the market. In the end you can say it's a good example or not, it depends on the amount of trophies you win, but we have tried to show that we are aware of the situation. We have tried not to overpay and get the best talent in at a young age.
'[De Bruyne] is a target decided by the club that I knew about for some time, since we spoke for the game about Genk. He is under the scrutiny for some time and the club was following this player.
'[Romelu]Lukaku was exactly the same, [Thibaut] Courtois was exactly the same and Petr Cech was exactly the same when we arrived in Chelsea in 2004.
'In the sense of club policy for the future I think it is the right thing and I will do everything in my power to help this player reach his maximum potential but on the basis of choice and decision-making eventually it will be down to the club.
'We as managers are here to protect and promote that talent on the basis of my decision-making for the immediate future that was not the case. If they reach an agreement with Genk the intention is to send him on loan. First we have to get the player and then we have to wait and see. Eventually the idea is that one.'
