Andre Villas-Boas was delighted with the side's comprehensive victory against Bolton on Saturday afternoon, and hopes we can now use it as a springboard in three competitions.

The win takes us fourth in the league until at least Sunday when Arsenal meet Tottenham in the north London derby, but Villas-Boas believes it can also help us in the FA Cup and Champions League, with important dates with Birmingham City and Napoli to come in the next few weeks.

'I think the pressure has been on to get results recently. Our run is not impressive the last couple of games so the team wanted to go back to winning ways,' Villas-Boas said. The most important thing now is to build from this day onwards, solve the cup ties and improve our position in the league.

'It can mean a new start and we need to get the form right and be competent against West Brom, Birmingham, Stoke and Napoli.

'It was important to win for the fans, they have been deserving and demanding a lot from us and today was important they could go home smiling. They have been looking for this feeling like us.'

Goals today came from David Luiz, Didier Drogba, who limped off injured, and Frank Lampard, who scored his 150th league goal, and 125th for Chelsea.

The midfielder had been recalled along with Michael Essien and Ashley Cole having started from the bench in the midweek defeat to Napoli.

'It was a different formation in the game against Napoli, where we had two defensive midfielders in front of the defence and with Mata between the lines. Today we were back to the normal 4-3-3 with fresh legs on the pitch and Bosingwa injured from the Napoli game, so a straightforward change.

'Lamps was always competing for a place since he returned from injury, so had his chance today and played fantastically well.

'He has been performing and had a fantastic game today. There are six players competing for three positions, and with a number 10 there are six for two. These decisions are for the benefit of the team.

'You have to disconnect the performance from the goal. Frank is an unbelievable midfielder with great timing in the box but his performance wasn't great just because he got the goal, it was because he helped the team, his possession and defending. Everyone competes for a place and if he plays like this he is nearer to selection like always.

'Regarding Michael his first game back was Sunderland, then played against Man United and Everton and missed Birmingham and Napoli, normal squad rotation and nothing in that.'

We had suffered frustration despite forcing 10 first-half corners this afternoon, so Villas-Boas was delighted to see David Luiz break the deadlock just two minutes into the second half.

'I think we were very competent in the first half but couldn't get the goal that would knock Bolton's defence. We got the goal straight away in the second half and scored a second from a set-play.

'The team talk was the same as recent games, we found positions tight and compact which makes it difficult to find space but a first goal gives you more space and eventually we scored more.

'It's part of our characteristics, as long as the cover is there, Essien normally, or Oriol or Raul, whoever is in that position, so we got the cover, David Luiz came out with the ball and it was a similar goal to that against Leverkusen. It's something we encourage and funnily enough at Bolton he was involved in two goals because of this situation.'

Villas-Boas now looks forward to the game on Sunday, and believes having earned the win today we will emerge in a stronger position than we were in at the start of the weekend.

'It is a question of goal difference that put Arsenal above us,' he said, 'it was no big scandal for me even though we dropped to fifth. The most important thing about this weekend is Arsenal v Tottenham tomorrow and which way we benefit from it, with Tottenham coming closer to us or [Arsenal dropping back].'

Finally, he added that Drogba will now be a doubt for international duty in midweek having suffered bruising in a second-half challenge. The forward will be assessed by Chelsea medical staff.
