KAKUTA IN FRANCE UNDER 17 VICTORY
The Uefa European Under 17 Championships opened on Sunday in dramatic fashion when Chelsea youth teamer Gaël Kakuta and his France team-mates beat Republic of Ireland in the final seconds of their game.
The Irish had taken a first-half lead against the highly-rated France side but with Kakuta, top scorer in Chelsea's run to the FA Youth Cup final, a bright presence, especially when moving from the left to the centre late on, they could not hold out.
France equalised in the 65th minute of the 80 minute match through Lyon's Yannis Tafer before in the third and final minute of stoppage time, Kakuta's ball forward was badly cleared by Ireland and substitute Alexandre Lacazette, also of Lyon, equalised.
Playing in midfield for Ireland throughout the game was Conor Clifford, a Chelsea schoolboy.
Unfortunately injury has denied Chelsea defender Jeffrey Bruma a place in the Dutch squad. The Netherlands lost their opening game 3-0 against host nation Turkey.
France's second group game is against Spain on Wednesday, kick-off 6pm UK time.
Live coverage of the tournament is available via the Uefa website and in the UK, on Eurosport.
