CHELSEA IN JORDAN: KICK-OFF
As part of our commitment to global charity partner Right to Play, a 20-strong Chelsea party of players and staff touched down in the Middle East last night for a week of community visits.
On the trip are reserve team regulars Michael Woods, Sergio Tejera and Shaun Cummings, due to be joined by Carl Magnay and Ben Sahar later in the week as we continue on to Israel.
Having landed late last night in Amman, the capital of Jordan, the group began the day with a visit to an all-girls school, in an area for Palestinian refugees.
Working with local Right to Play staff, the young players mixed in to help organise and take part in the games, and were greeted with adulation by the 600 students.
The visit was made even more special with a live school band playing throughout, and Spaniard Tejera could not contain himself, bobbing along with the lively rhythm.
Facilities in this part of the world are limited, but it shows how even the simplest games, involving running, hopping and jumping can bring happiness to some of the most disadvantaged children.
With the games complete, and autographs signed, it was on to a larger all-boys school, where again the Chelsea coaches were in the thick of the action, leading the students through a range of activities before finishing with a game in the school yard.
Tejera, taking a break from scrawling his name on paper, hands and arms, was again the star of the show, making sure he got himself on the score sheet in the friendly match that concluded the activities.
Right to Play aims to improve the lives of children in the most disadvantaged areas of the world by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace.
This visit is the second major initiative in the six-year partnership announced between Chelsea and Right To Play at the House of Commons in January 2007, following last year's trip to Ghana with Michael Essien as the spearhead.
There will be more to come from this trip on chelseafc.com as the tour moves on to Israel, and be sure to look out for exclusive coverage on Chelsea TV.
