The signing of the Peruvian international in the summer of 2007 increased the striker stock in squad ahead of a campaign that took Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou to the African Cup of Nations.
Twenty-eight-years-old at the time of his free transfer from Bayern Munich, Claudio had plenty of experience from a career that had started in South America and moved on to Germany in 1999, first to play for Werder Bremen for two seasons where he scored 28 goals in 76 appearances.
His next six seasons were spent at Bayern Munich where three times he won the league and cup double, in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Michael Ballack was a team-mate in all three seasons.
Before that in 2001, the Fifa Intercontinental Cup was won. In total he found the net 101 times in 254 appearances.
He missed the start of last campaign's pre-season training due to involvement in the Copa America where his aerial strength was on display with two goals before Peru succumbed to Argentina in the quarter-finals.
His Chelsea career began in scoring fashion with a goal in the opening league game at home to Birmingham but Claudio failed to find the net again until the re-match at St Andrew's in January.
The arrival of Nicolas Anelka that same month knocked Claudio down the striker pecking order and out of the registered Champions League squad.
He was also suspended by Peru from international football for 18 months after a disciplinary investigation into behaviour in days prior to a game.
Claudio ended his first year in London with two goals from 10+22 games and didn't feature after a sub appearance in the FA Cup defeat at Barnsley in March. When he did play, he was frequently asked to play behind the more forward men.
Away from football he is a keen racehorse owner.
