Genk started the season by beating Standard Liège to win the Belgian Super Cup.
Genk have reached the Champions League group stage once before in 2002/03. They finished fourth with four draws and two defeats. On their travels they achieved two draws at Roma and AEK Athens and lost heavily at the Bernabeu 0-6 to Real Madrid.
The Belgian champions reached the group stage this term by overturning Maccabi Haifa's 2-1 first-leg advantage in the play-offs to win by the same score in the return. Genk won 4-1 on penalties after extra time thanks to two saves from Laszio Köteles.
Last season Genk competed in the Europa League and were eliminated by eventual winners Porto 2-7 managed by Andre Villas-Boas in the play-off round.
Genk have won 20 and lost 17 of their 48 games in European competition. They are still looking for their first win in the Champions League proper.
