Chelsea's Under-21s side is part of the development process for young players at the club.

Replacing the old reserve league, a new Under-21 nationwide league was introduced for the 2012/13 season.

Rather than seasoned professionals not currently selected for the first team, the Under-21 side is more likely to be young players looking to press for a first team breakthrough or a chance to gain experience on loan with a lower division club. However a small number of 'over-age' players can be selected so on occasions established first team squad members will be given Under-21 outings, especially when coming back from injury or in need of match fitness.

Players who have done well in the youth team will be given the chance to test themselves against older opposition while still eligible to play for both sides.

Consequently, the Under-21s are judged on individual performances rather than results as the club looks to nurture future stars - although the development of a winning mentality is encouraged.

In addition to the Under-21 league, and a new Under-21 Cup introduced in 2013/14, Chelsea also enter a side in the UEFA Youth League which is competed by Under-19 teams from clubs across Europe whose senior side qualified for the Champions League. It follows a similar format. There is an overlap between the Under-21 and Under-19 squads involved.
