ABOUT THE UNDER-21S AND UNDER 19S

Chelsea's Under-21s side is part of the development process for young players at the club.

Replacing the old reserve league, a new Under-21 nationwide Under-21 league was introduced for the 2012/13 season.

Rather than seasoned professionals not currently selected for the first team, the Under-21 side is more likely to be young players looking to press for a first team breakthrough or a chance to gain experience on loan with a lower division club. However a small number of 'over-age' players can be selected so on occasions established first team squad members will be given Under-21 outings, especially when coming back from injury or in need of match fitness.

Players who have done well in the youth team will be given the chance to test themselves against older opposition while still eligible to play for both sides.

Consequently, the Under-21s are judged on individual performances rather than results as the club looks to nurture future stars - although the development of a winning mentality is encouraged.

In addition to the Under-21 league, Chelsea also enter a side in the Next Gen league which involves Under-19 teams across Europe playing in an approximation to the Champions League format. There is an overlap between the Under-21 and Under-19 squads involved.
