Having beaten Everton 2-1 in the FA Cup final the previous May, we faced champions Manchester United in the 2009 FA Community Shield at Wembley.
In an entertaining match, Nani gave Man United an early lead with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, before Ricardo Carvalho equalised for us seven minutes into the second half, pouncing on a loose ball to head home.
We took the lead shortly after when Didier Drogba ran at the opposition defence, before sliding his pass into the path of the unmarked Frank Lampard, who powered his drive beyond Ben Foster and in off the post.
With the clock ticking down and the game seemingly won, Wayne Rooney raced on to a Ryan Giggs pass in the 92nd minute and cooly lifted the ball over Petr Cech to send the game into a penalty shoot-out.
Lampard scored our first kick, before Cech saved from Giggs to put us in the ascendancy. Michael Ballack and Drogba both scored, and while Michael Carrick netted for United, Patrice Evra saw his tame effort easily saved. Salomon Kalou took the decisive kick and expertly dispatched his penalty into the top corner, giving new manager Carlo Ancelotti his first trophy in English football.
