  • That wonderful round shouldered running, a sharp left foot shot that scythed through many goalkeepers were hallmarks of this true son of Chelsea. I saw his debut game against West Ham when I was young and knew, in my childlike way, that he was going to be very good. The Division 2 season saw him come into his own and 4 goals against Portsmouth in May '63 are clear memories. Then part of Doc's Diamonds throughout the mid 60s promised so much. Goals at all levels, often with panache were his stock-in-trade. All things must pass,yet Bobby Tambling will be remembered fondly by so many. He even made my rather quiet father cheer him loudly. Thanks Bobby; go well
  • Bobby was playing when I first started supporting Chelsea in 1967, he was one of those players that excited me and cemented my loyalty to the club. He was also a regular on Chelsea TV in later years and came across as a true gentleman and a top quality person.   • " I was talking to my Dad the other day about when he used to coach our football team when I was a little kid. We talked about how I ended up playing on the left side of Midfield despite being right footed? - (I still play in that position to this day for my Sunday morning team at 44) I remembered one of the other kids Dad's had helped out with the coaching for a few months when I was about 11 and he had noticed that I could kick the ball with both feet and cross with my left foot and so told me to play on the left. He seemed to know so much about the game, was really encouraging and seemed to like me because I was a creative, attacking player with no interest in defending. His stepson only played for our team us one season after they had moved over to the UK from Ireland and after that year I never saw either of them again. I had no idea at the time who the bloke was. Just a Dad helping out with training of a kids footy team. Turns out it was Bobby Tambling. Rest well Bobby. Thanks for the advice. "

Of course Bobby Tambling - he got my active match going Chelsea support off to the best possible start and there has been no looking back. A great player - 202 goals speak for themselves. Like many, I was lucky enough to meet him, maybe about 15 years ago, at a Bristol & Bath supporters event in Bristol, and I couldnt beleive how gracious and humble he was. My daughter was in hospital at the time and he, along with Chopper and Charlie Cooke were all kind enough to sign a get well card for her. They say you shouldn't meet your heroes, but I am bloody glad I did. Rest in Peace Bobby.

  • Bobby Tambling's footballing career was way before my time. But I do remember an occasion in 2013 when he did a lap of honour around the Stamford Bridge pitch at half-time in 2013. I was there in the Shed End and remember how overwhelmed with emotion he seemed. He was in a wheelchair at the time. It was a special moment, very different from any other lap of honour I'd ever witnessed at the Bridge. Ever since, I had always wondered how he'd been doing. My condolences now go to his family.

  • It was great to be able to meet him when Chelsea came for a preseason fixture in Charlotte in 2015.
  • As a lad of 7 was when I was first really became aware of Bobby Tambling - watching from the terraces with my Dad. I cried when we were relegated, but my Dad promised me that with Bobby in the team we would come straight back up - which to my delight and 35 goals from Bobby later we did. From then on he was my Chelsea Hero until he left for Palace, despite many people by then idolising Peter Osgood. So many great memories and wonderful goals he delivered over his time with the Blues. I even got to meet him many years later at Stamford Bridge and it fulfilled a lifelong dream of mine. A real gentleman, as Frank Lampard has said. Thank you for everything Bobby and rest in peace.

  • Bobby, my sporting hero. I never forgot him, often had those football memories as a young boy and Bobby was always there, at the top. I lost my 'Tambling 11' shirt long ago but I wore it with pride. Still support Chelsea. But I'll always remember the excitement when my Dad took me to the Bridge and I stood on my wooden box at the front of the enclosure (now gone).   • My hero as a 10 year old boy, I grew up adoring Bobby. For seven years in the 60's he was integral to all the good times under the Doc and Dave Sexton. So many wonderful memories of goals scored against Liverpool , United and Leeds. A 'Pele' type banana shot scored against Wednesday so rare in those halcyon days. More personally sharing a beer at his Benefit Dinner, being there at the Centenary celebration in 05 when he was rightfully recognised as a Chelsea great.   • When I was 10 years old, I went to Stamford Bridge in January 2017 to watch Chelsea beat Hull City 2-0 with goals from Diego Costa and Gary Cahill. I stayed in the hotel with my mum and as we were sitting near the bar before we went to our room, Bobby spotted me and came over and told me who he was. I was absolutely amazed that i was meeting Chelsea's second highest goal-scorer and one of the club's greatest ever players. He was so lovely to both me and my mum as we talked all about Chelsea and his time at the club. He gave me a signed picture and after we took a photo he invited us to meet more of the legends as part of the hospitality before match day. When I next saw him, along with Ron Harris and other Chelsea legends, he was still so kind and chatty and had so many great stories to tell us and helped make the experience of my trip to Stamford Bridge the best time of my life. He gave me his book and my mum his email address if we were ever coming back to the London for future visits. Bobby was an amazing person and absolutely lovely man. I am privileged to have met him and can't thank him enough for his generosity when I met him. Whilst my knowledge of Chelsea at 10 years old was quite extensive, I didn't recognise who he was before he told me. So, the fact that he decided to introduce himself to me and invite us to the Hospitality area just out of kindness, speaks volumes to the incredible person he was. Thank you for everything Bobby, what you did for me and my mum during our trip is something I will never forget.

  • Back in 2013 I was at Chelsea vs Fulham where we won 2-0. My dad and I stayed in the hotel and later on that evening Bobby Tambling was knocking around chatting to the fans at the bar upstairs. I was 13 at the time but when he got to us he must have easily spent half an hour or more chatting with us and telling us stories from his playing career and just life in general. He talked a lot about his time in Ireland, Cork in particular. I enjoyed that chat with him and I will forever remember it and how such a nice man he was💙

I do remember Barry Bridges haring down the right wing, banking like an aircraft and crossing a ball at chest height. Saturdays were marvellous then. If only.

A wonderful permanent childhood memory for me. And around 10 to 12 years ago I met Bobby when he was acting as a host at Chelsea home games, on this occasion with Peter Bonetti. I toldhim of the story of that wonderful boyhood experience of that memorable match and goal. He was so gracious and humble and I could tell he enjoyed the chat.   • "Watched Bobby make his debut in 1959 against West Ham and scored one of the goals in a 3-2 win for the Blues. Following the departure of Jimmy Greaves in 1961, Chelsea were relegated the following season. Tommy Docherty became our new Manager and a new young Chelsea team was created, with Tambling made our new Captain. In the final game of that season in 1962/63, Chelsea beat Portsmouth 7-0, with Bobby scoring four goals and securing promotion back to Division 1. Wonderful player, true Chelsea legend. 👏👏👏"

  • I once had the privilege of telling Bobby Tambling (live on Chelsea TV) that he was my all time favourite Chelsea player. That's still the case. One of the football world's true gentlemen. Given he was a prolific scorer he ought to have had considerably more England caps. For Blues supporters who saw him play Bobby will live long in our memories, and be sadly missed.   • "I started to support the blues in 1963 when we gained promotion to the old first division. I remember amongst the good players we had in those days, one player stood out....and that was Bobby Tambling. Throughout the sixties he was the exciting winger who was a great goalscorer, once scoring 5 goals away at Aston Villa. His penalty taking ability achieved many a goal using his famous left foot placing the ball out of the opposing goalkeepers reach with his accuracy. It was a sad day recently upon reading of his passing. With sincere condolences to his family and friends, we will all fondly remember him in his exploits in the royal blue shirt and will be remembered as a legend amongst legends at the Bridge. His goals helped the team move straight back into the First Division after relegation and as you say subsequently to secure the League Cup. I well remember watching him score 5 ( five) goals in a 6-2 league victory at Villa Park in September 1966. My Dad and I went to the match and were delighted to see at the ground Kenneth Wolstenholme recording a commentary for Match of the Day, which we were able to see after a quick journey home! R.I.P. "

  • Met Bobby quite a few times he even presented me with my Pitch Owners Certificate on the pitch at Stamford Bridge. Had a few chats with him and he was always happy to talk. Remember on one occasion Bobby walking into a packed pub pre match, and the crowd parted so that he could walk through, he was given a lot of respect by young and old alike. Bobby was a thoroughly nice man and a real credit to Chelsea Football Club.

My granddad used to watch him play back in the 60's and I inherited from my granddad his autobiography "Bobby Tambling - Goals in Life" which is a great read.
