Viktoria Zizkov 0 Chelsea 0 – Cup Winners’ Cup, 29th September 1994

Losing the FA Cup final in 1994 was hard to take but there was one consolation. Our conquerors in the final Manchester United has also won the league which meant we were eligible to take part in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, our first foray into Europe since 1971.

Our first opponents that year were little know Czech team Viktoria Zizkov. A crowd of 22,000, capacity at that time, packed into Stamford Bridge, not knowing what to expect from an inexperienced team that was further depleted by a limit on non-English players.

As it was the team seemed determined to make up for lost time and were two goals ahead within four minutes, Frank Sinclair and Paul Furlong netting. Then the inexperience showed as we did not appear either willing to continue to attack or capable of closing out the game. As a result Zizkov were level by half-time. After the break, the team were re-energised and long range efforts by David Rocastle and Dennis Wise gave us a lead for the second game.

The return, moved from the Czech capital Prague to the small town of Jablonec because of unfounded fears of hooliganism, was a far less eventful affair although if Dmitri Kharine had not saved an early penalty the final result might have turned out differently.

As it was we had won our in Europe for the first time since the thrashing Jeunesse Hautcharage and we had set out on a run that would only end at the semi-final stage.
