Liverpool 1 Chelsea 3 – Champions League, April 8th 2009
Chelsea 4 Liverpool 4 – Champions League, April 14th 2009
For the fifth year in succession our name was paired with Liverpool in the Champions League. This though was the first time we had played them at the quarter-final stage and unlike many of the previous contests it provided some thrilling entertainment.
The first leg was at Anfield and again we fell behind to an early goal. This time though, we came roaring back. Didier Drogba missed two good chances and then Branislav Ivanovic headed home a corner for his first Chelsea goal. Amazingly he scored his second half way through the second half. Drogba added a third and in truth we could have won even more easily.
If the first leg had proved to a great European night at Anfield, the second game saw one of the most amazing games ever staged at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool had tied the aggregate scores by half-time with a free-kick and penalty. We still held the lead on away goals but the nerves were beginning to show.
The second half was a different story as Drogba touched in a Nicolas Anelka cross and when Alex lashed home a free kick we were two goals clear again. Frank Lampard added a third and the tie looked safe. Liverpool though scored twice in two minutes and suddenly they needed just one more with ten minutes remaining.
Eventually, with the game almost over, Lampard scored his second of the game and we were through with the aggregate score a remarkable 7 – 5 in our favour.
