Our FA Cup final win over Aston Villa set up a Charity Shield clash against Premier League winners Manchester United prior to the start of the 2000/01 campaign, and having started the match as underdogs, we ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.
Chelsea dominated the game from the first whistle and almost went in front when debutant Mario Stanic came close with a header at the far post from Gianfranco Zola's cross.
We were soon rewarded for our efforts though, when new £15million signing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink gave us the lead midway through the first half after he latched on to a Gustavo Poyet header to fire past Fabien Barthez.
Man United never really got going and when Roy Keane was dismissed in the second half for a late tackle on Poyet, the game was there for the taking for Gianluca Vialli's side.
It was another Dutchman, Mario Melchiot, who scored the decisive second goal, expertly weaving his way in from the right-hand side before curling a sublime effort into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area.
As well as Hasselbaink and Stanic, Eidur Gudjohnsen also made his first appearance for the club, replacing Zola in the 73rd minute.
