FA Community Shield: 2005

Having clinched the league title a few months previously, we faced Arsenal in the annual curtain-raiser following the Gunners' FA Cup final win against Manchester United.

With Wembley still under redevelopment, the game took place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on and saw bitter rivals Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger go managerial head to managerial head.

Left-back Asier Del Horno made his full debut for the Blues, and the Spaniard teed up Didier Drogba to open the scoring in the eighth minute, the Ivorian latching on to a ball from deep to (not for the only time) outmuscle Phillipe Senderos and fire the Blues in front.

In a game where chances were few and far between, it was Drogba who was proving the difference between the teams, and the striker doubled our advantage with his second of the game in the 58th minute.

He appeared to have overrun the ball after rounding Jens Lehmann, but showed tremendous fight to win it back ahead of Lauren, before firing into the top corner through three Arsenal defenders.

With the Blues seemingly coasting to victory, however, Arsenal were back in the game four minutes later when Cesc Fabregas pounced to fire home from Freddie Ljungberg's cross, setting up a tense finish.

Both teams had chances in the closing stages, with Frank Lampard going close for us, before Thierry Henry wasted a golden opportunity to equalise, but Mourinho's men saw the game out to secure our first trophy of the season.
