Chelsea FC Ultimate XI - Wingers

Our Ultimate XI feature continues this week with a look at some of the best wingers to play for Chelsea over the past two decades. We’ve selected six players who have excelled on the flanks for the Blues since the turn of the Millennium and want you to select two of them for the Ultimate XI team.

Damien Duff

Appearances: 95+30

Goals: 19

Honours: Premier League 2005, 2006, League Cup 2005

Possessing excellent pace and a fine left foot, Ireland international Duff was one of Chelsea’s first big signings following the arrival of Roman Abramovich in 2003. He was a key player in the team which finished runners-up in the Premier League in 2004 and formed an irresistible combination with Arjen Robben when we won the League Cup and Premier League the following season.

Joe Cole

Chelsea FC debut: MSK Zilina (a), Champions League qualifier, 13.08.03

Appearances: 189+93

Goals: 39

Honours: Premier League 2005, 2006, 2010, FA Cup 2007, 2009, 2010, League Cup 2005, 2007, Chelsea Player of the Year 2008

Blessed with excellent touch, vision and creative ability, Joe Cole helped the Blues win six major honours in his six seasons at Stamford Bridge and was named our Player of the Year in 2008. His 39 Chelsea goals included a stunning solo effort against Manchester United to clinch the 2006 title and a cheeky backheel in a crucial win at Old Trafford in our Double-winning campaign in 2010.

Arjen Robben

Chelsea FC debut: Blackburn Rovers (h), Premier League, 23.10.04

Appearances: 74+32

Goals: 19

Honours: Premier League 2005, 2006, FA Cup 2007, League Cup 2005, 2007

Robben joined Chelsea at age of 20 and while injury limited him to 106 games in his three seasons at the Bridge, he played a big role in our back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. With his searing pace and fine left foot, the talented Dutch winger netted 19 goals for the Blues and provided a pinpoint cross for Didier Drogba to head in the winner in our 2007 League Cup win over Arsenal.

Florent Malouda

Chelsea FC debut: Manchester United, Community Shield, 05.08.07

Appearances: 173+56

Goals: 45

Honours: Premier League 2010, FA Cup 2009, 2010, 2012, Champions League 2012

Malouda was a key player in Carlo Ancelotti’s high-scoring Chelsea side in the 2009/10 season when he netted 15 goals and provided several assists to help the Blues clinch the Premier League and FA Cup Double. A fine crosser of the ball from the left flank, the France international helped the Blues win five trophies and scored in three FA Cup semi-final victories in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Chelsea FC debut: Basel (a), Champions League, 18.09.13

Appearances: 239+90

Goals: 59

Honours: Premier League 2015, 2017, FA Cup 2018, League Cup 2015, Europa League 2019, Chelsea Player of the Year 2016

Since he turned down an offer from Tottenham Hotspur to join Chelsea in 2013, Willian has been a big favourite with Blues fans thanks to his tireless running, timely goals and deadly accuracy from free-kicks. In addition to winning five major honours with the Blues including two Premier League titles, the Brazilian was also named the club’s Player of the Year in 2016.

Chelsea FC debut: West Bromwich Albion (a), Premier League, 23.08.15

Appearances: 140+61

Goals: 43

Honours: Premier League 2017, FA Cup 2018, Europa League 2019

Pedro made an immediate impression after he arrived from Barcelona in 2015, scoring on his debut against West Bromwich Albion and he was in fine form for the Blues in 2016/17 when his 13 goals helped us win the Premier League. While small in stature, the Spaniard possesses an excellent footballing brain, blistering pace and the ability to shoot with both feet.
