Chelsea 4 Ajax 4 – Champions League (5 November 2019)
Number eight in our list of the most-exciting matches is Chelsea’s incredible comeback against Ajax this past November for a critical Champions League point.
Even with an early converted penalty from Jorginho, Ajax had a 4-1 lead with 35 minutes remaining in this thrilling match at Stamford Bridge back in November 2019. Vital Champions League points were at stake, and with VAR playing a key role in the match, nothing was certain. A Tammy Abraham handball had already proven that.
With time ticking down, Cesar Azpilicueta tapped in a quick goal at 63 minutes to start building the momentum for the Blues. Then, Chelsea gained an advantage with back-to-back red cards for Ajax in the last 20 minutes of the game. The Dutch team were down to nine men, and the resulting penalty by Jorginho brought the score to 4-3.
Hope was increasing in the stands. Then, at 74 minutes, another full-back Reece James, then 19 years old, became our youngest-ever Champions League goalscorer. With his thrilling shot, the game became an instant European classic. Even with a late winning goal from Azpilicueta disallowed, it was still a match to remember and a brilliant rally to draw Ajax 4-4.
In later Champions League matches, Chelsea drew against Valencia and got a win vs. Lillie, advancing the Blues from the group stage to the Round of 16 in the Champions League. However, it was this November match against Ajax that deserves a replay of the highlights below. Chelsea’s dramatic performance and the excitement of Chelsea supporters worldwide made it our #8 pick in the countdown.
