The U.S. Ultimate XI for Chelsea FC: Full Team Selections

The votes are in, and the wait is over! Each week, Chelsea fans in America weighed in on their top players from the last 20 years. Check out the results, and see if your favorites were selected.

Goalkeeper: Petr Cech

Petr Cech won every major honor with the Blues, including four Premier League titles, four FA Cup and the Champions League. It’s no wonder an overwhelming 92% of 1,415 U.S. fans voted for Cech as the best Chelsea goalkeeper in the last two decades. If you’re curious about the Czech’s global appeal, he also was a runaway winner in Asia – the highest share in Vietnam, where he picked up 97% of the vote.

U.S. Fan Poll Results:

  • Petr Cech 92%
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga 4%
  • Thibaut Courtois 2%
  • Carlo Cudicini 1%

Full-backs: Ashley Cole & Branislav Ivanovic

Between Branislav Ivanovic’s knack for scoring crucial goals and Ashley Cole being the first player to lift the trophy seven times, American Chelsea fans made two excellent selections for their top full-backs. Amazingly, U.S. and Asian fans selected the same full-backs and have nearly identical teams overall.

U.S. Fan Poll Results:

  • Ashley Cole 45%
  • Branislav Ivanovic 31%
  • Cesar Azpilicueta 19%
  • William Gallas 2%
  • Paulo Ferreira 2%
  • Marcos Alonso 2%

Center-backs: John Terry & Ricardo Carvalho

John Terry, the home-grown player, won it all during his 19 seasons at Stamford Bridge, and he won it all in the U.S. poll for center-backs. It’s appropriate that his impressive partner on the pitch, Ricardo Carvalho, also pulled in enough votes to also be selected into the Ultimate XI. Asian Chelsea fans showed the same sentiments by voting Terry on top 59% in Vietnam, 58% in Thailand and 55% in Indonesia, and Carvalho taking 18% overall in Asian. Indeed, these two are quite the dynamic duo.

U.S. Fan Poll Results:

  • John Terry 50%
  • Ricardo Carvalho 22%
  • Gary Cahill 11%
  • Marcel Desailly 10%
  • David Luiz 5%
  • Antonio Rudiger 2%

Midfielders: Frank Lampard & N’Golo Kante

No surprise here. Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s current manager and all-time leading scorer with 211 goals to his name, was voted into the top spot at 38% for midfielders by U.S. supporters. Although Michael Essien had a great showing with 17%, N’Golo Kante pulled out a win with 18% of the vote.

Attacking Midfielder/Support Striker: Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard was a clear favorite with American fans at 86%. Seven seasons at Chelsea, delighting supporters with his creativity, pace, dribbling ability, pinpoint passing and keen eye for goal, likely helped him earn this coveted spot. Within the lineup below, Hazard could even serve as a forward with Drogba as striker based on the final selections, making him a great selection for this team.

U.S. Fan Poll Results:

  • Eden Hazard 86%
  • Gianfranco Zola 9%
  • Juan Mata 3%
  • Oscar 2%

Center-forward: Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba blew away the competition with 93% of the vote for center-forwards in both the U.S. and Asian. And rightly so, since he was a key man in much of Chelsea’s success during his first spell with the club from 2004 to 2012. He became the first player to score in four FA Cup finals and netted our crucial equalizer and winning penalty against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final. It’s clear that he’s earned his place in the hearts of our U.S. fans and in their Ultimate XI team.
