More Academy graduates in first team squad

Two Chelsea Academy products have been elevated to full-time members of Jose Mourinho’s first team squad.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Isaiah Brown (pictured above) join Juan Cuadrado as players who have been added. The Colombian was signed from Fiorentina yesterday (Monday).

Loftus-Cheek (pictured below), the midfielder who turned 19 last month, made his debut in the Champions League group stage match at home to Sporting Lisbon in December, and also came on as a substitute in Saturday’s match against Manchester City. He joined Chelsea a decade ago.

Izzy Brown, an 18-year-old forward who moved to our Academy in the summer of 2013, was an unused substitute against Manchester City and was also on the bench for the Capital One Cup game at Shrewsbury earlier in the season.

Both were part of last season’s FA Youth Cup-winning team and are England Under-19 internationals. They have been regulars for Chelsea’s Under-21 side this season with Brown scoring as recently as last night’s win over Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

Three players moved up to the first team squad from the Academy’s development squads in 2014 – Nathan Ake, Andreas Christensen and Lewis Baker. Goalkeeper Jamal Blackman also re-joined the squad at the start of January following his loan at Middlesbrough and the departure of Mark Schwarzer. Baker is currently on loan to Sheffield Wednesday where he started the last two games.
