Matic: Very proud

Nemanja Matic expressed his delight after securing his first Barclays Premier League title.

The Serbian, a regular in Jose Mourinho’s side since the start of the season, completed the full 90 minutes against Crystal Palace as Eden Hazard’s first-half goal clinched the victory which saw us crowned champion, and he believes it’s no more than we deserve.

‘I feel very proud, we are very happy for the supporters,’ he said. ‘To be champions you have to be the best team all season. We’ve shown character and quality. We still have three games to play but we are champions, we are strong and I’m happy about that.

‘We’ve been in first position since very early. We always feel pressure because we play for a big club, we have to try to win every game, but we’ve done what we needed to do.

‘It was a very difficult game. Crystal Palace didn’t have anything to lose, we knew that before the game, but it was very important for us to win.’

When we last won the title Matic made three substitute appearances, but this time around he has been an integral member of the side.

‘In 2010 I only played a few games so this is special for me because I’ve played in almost every match. I’m very happy,’ he said.

With three matches still to play, the midfielder is delighted we have fulfilled our main objective at the start of the campaign.

‘It was very important because still have some tough games, we have to play West Brom away and Sunderland, so this was our opportunity,’ Matic said.

‘We knew it would be difficult but the most important thing was to get the three points.’
