Colkett: Amazing experience

Youngster Charlie Colkett made a first-team debut in Thailand on Saturday, and is hoping to catch the eye again in Australia.

Colkett turned in an excellent display during Saturday’s 1-0 win over the Thailand All-Stars in Bangkok, showing his fine touch and composure on the ball, featuring in the build-up to the goal, which was scored by his Academy team-mate Dominic Solanke.

‘It was an absolutely amazing experience,’ said the 18-year-old. ‘I’ve been really looking forward to it, I just wanted to impress and hopefully I’ve done that.

‘I tried to be confident, the manager said to keep it simple, keep things ticking over and to try and show my quality but also stay disciplined defensively.

‘For the goal I got on the ball, had two touches, played it  out wide and then the cross came in and Dom scored, as usual. That’s a good feeling to have an impact, that’s what we’re here to do so I’m really happy with that.’

Colkett, twice an FA Youth Cup winner as well as member of the Under-19s who were crowned European champions this season, believes the younger players have fitted in well alongside their more established senior team-mates, and has enjoyed being a part of the champions’ travelling party.

‘It’s been an amazing trip. What an experience it’s been,’ he said. ‘Training was lively, the match was great and just being around the first team, which hopefully I’ll be able to do in the future a lot more, was great. It’s been incredible.

‘Sydney is giong to be amazing, there are meant to be 80,000 fans so I really look forward to that, and I’ve never been to the city, so it’s really exciting.’
