The Pre-Match Briefing Special Mentions

Duchess of the Shed:

Eight-year-old Islingtonian Rjay Bryan: ‘You support Man U?’

The Duchess of Cambridge: ‘Chelsea!’

Rjay: ‘Oh, the same!’ (They high five.)

Specially special: ‘[Chelsea is] a special team, a special club. I don’t know why the people don’t understand why it is special – it’s because Mourinho is special, the players are special, the president is special, the fans are special.’ Hristo Stoichkov, who was quite special himself, August 2015

Moment of the Season: Pegging back Tottenham and ending their hopes of a first title win in over half a century.

Moment of the Season 2: Completing the league double over Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal for the fourth time in 11 seasons.

Moment of the Eden 1: The sensational Hazard goal that almost took the roof off Stamford Bridge and broke Spurs’ hearts.

Moment of the Eden 2: The no.10’s wonder strike at Anfield after a dazzling run in the shape of an ampersand.

Not quite Maradona: ‘He wasn’t Maradona but he came close’. Jose Mourinho on Pedro’s debut goal at West Brom in August.

Close but no cigar: John Terry’s near-perfect reenactment of Gianfranco Zola’s famous back-heel flick against the same side, Norwich, which sadly hit the side-netting.

Sweet Toffees: ‘If I could have climbed in amongst everyone and hugged you all, I would have. I always dreamed of diving into the Matthew Harding.’ John Terry on his dramatic late equaliser in the 3-3 with against Everton.

Bad omen: The lone pitch sprinkler going rogue 10 minutes into the second half of the League Cup win at Walsall in September.

Self-deprecation: ‘You’re nothing special, we lose every week.’ Chelsea fans take Leicester City down a peg or two.

How does that work again?: Tottenham had an all-time record nine different players cautioned, committed red card fouls, gouged an eye, stamped on a hand – and still had 11 on the pitch at the end of the game.

How d’you like them apples: ‘I dare the Sky reporter to ask Mourinho “do think you might get relegated this year”.’ Tweet by former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar, 16 Aug 2015.

‘Oh no I don't believe it 2-2.’ Tweet by former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar, 2 May 2016.

Spiked Guns: Arsenal managed only three shots on target in our two meetings this season.

Nostra culpa: ‘Jose Mourinho trusted us too much, gave us extra holiday, so much respect and help. We let him down.’ Cesc Fabregas

Thanks for the memories: ‘The fans are being absolutely unbelievable with us. When people are so nice to me and they sing my name and “Stand up for the Special One,” I feel a bit embarrassed, because I don’t know how to react. When you are champions and winning matches, you wave, you share the emotion with the people.

‘One thing is for sure: Chelsea fans, they don’t need that special vitamin to feed memory, because their memory is amazing. Because if not, they don’t treat me the way they do.’ Jose Mourinho, 12 December 2015.

Finally, thank you all very much for following this column throughout the campaign. We will be back to usher in the Antonio Conte era with a special Pre-Season Briefing in the first week of August.
