Blues are Bremen bound

The final leg of the squad’s match preparations for the forthcoming season has been confirmed with Germany the destination and Bundesliga side Werder Bremen the opposition.

The match, which takes place on Sunday 7 August (3pm local time/2pm UK time) comes three days after the United States tour concludes with an International Champions Cup game against AC Milan. Like the Milan match in Minneapolis, the fixture in Bremen will take place inside a state-of-the-art stadium and will be shown live on Chelsea TV and in the UK and Ireland.

Werder will host the Blues at their Weserstadion home which has undergone extensive refurbishment, completed in 2011. Our fans who attended the Champions League meeting between the two sides in 2006/07 will certainly notice the difference, although we did play a pre-season game there two years ago.

It was a goal from our own Papy Djilobodji, who was on loan at Werder in the second part of the last campaign, that helped ensure they will play Bundesliga football this season. His late winner saved them from a relegation play-off. In the Germans’ current squad is evergreen former Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro. The 37-year-old scored 16 goals last season.

As with all our pre-season matches, fans in the UK and Ireland can see the game live on Chelsea TV, with supporters around the world able to watch the full 90 minutes and highlights shortly afterwards. Ticket news will be announced in due course.
