Conte: Seeking improvements

Antonio Conte says his team have learnt a lot in recent weeks and the Italian believes the players must stick together and work hard as we look to get back to winning ways.

Conte was speaking to the media at Cobham this afternoon ahead of our game at Hull City tomorrow, our final fixture before the October international break.

Before any questions related to Chelsea matters, however, he was asked about the stories in the media this week regarding corruption in football, with Sam Allardyce having lost his job as England manager.

‘In this type of situation it’s important to know the real truth, it’s important to know all the information,’ he said.

‘In this case the FA is working to investigate, which is right. Before you say if someone is guilty or not it’s important to know the real truth.’

Conte then provided a fitness update on John Terry, with the skipper set to miss his fourth game in a row tomorrow.

‘He’s not available because he’s not recovered from his ankle injury,’ added the Blues boss. ‘I think we will see him after the international break. Mikel has a small problem but all the other players are available.’

Following successive Premier League defeats, against Liverpool and Arsenal, a lot of hard, intense work has been overseen by Conte and his staff on the Cobham pitches this week.

‘It’s never good when you lose two games,’ he said. ‘But I also think in these two games we learnt a lot of important things and we must work very hard to recover.

‘It’s important not to forget the past, because the past is very clear. We finished 10th last season and that means there were problems. Now, with great work and hard work we are trying to sort the situation; me, the players and the club together.

‘We don’t have a magic wand to change the situation in a few months. We must work hard together and we are doing this. We must understand that only through hard work can we close the gap.

‘I think we faced two very strong teams who are at the top and we have a lot to improve.’

Roman Abramovich paid a visit to the training ground earlier this week, and Conte explained why he enjoys talking to the club’s owner.

‘Mr Abramovich is very passionate about football and to talk with him is very interesting because I like to explain my ideas about football.

‘Good communication is always important with all the people, to be clear on every aspect. It’s important to be clear with players, staff, the club and the owner.’

Conte also spoke about three of his players – Cesar Azpilicueta, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro – after the trio were left out of the Spain squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

‘Azpi, Cesc and Pedro are three important players for Chelsea,’ he said. ‘They are working very well with great commitment and a good attitude, which is important.

‘I think this can be an opportunity for them to work hard and try to get back into the Spain squad. We are talking about three great players.’
