Certainly not for the first time Eden Hazard produced the goods on the big occasion and he spoke about beating Manchester City afterwards.
The Belgian scored both goals in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Pep Guardiola’s side, the first with a firmly struck deflected shot and the second after his penalty was initially saved. The result maintained a seven-point lead at the top on a night when Tottenham also won and moved us 14 points ahead of fourth-place City.
‘It was a big win of course,’ said Hazard. ‘I don’t know if the way we played was beautiful but the most important thing is to win games. The way we play we can do better but after a defeat it was important to come back here and win three points against a great team.
‘It is always a real battle when you play against Man City, we were lucky to score the first and then they scored to make it 1-1. In the first half we did everything, we created a couple of chances and we scored another one so the result is 2-1 and we are happy.’
Hazard offered support for his countryman Thibaut Courtois whose loose ball forward led to the City equaliser.
‘Thibaut makes some great saves,’ he said. ‘Okay, he made a mistake with the goal but everyone is involved in this team and we are lucky to have him in the team.’
Our no.10 has now contributed 13 goals to the league campaign with many saying he is playing as well as ever, but personal achievement is not on his mind.
‘I try to do my best and help the team to win games. We have now eight games to play, we want to finish top, that is my target.
‘We have to be ready for everything and we have to concentrate on Chelsea not Tottenham. We are nearly there but there is a long way to go. We have some difficult games but we are ready for everything, we prepare every week to ready for the games.’
