David Luiz: The next challenge

David Luiz marked his 30th birthday in style on Saturday, producing a man-of-the-match performance to help Chelsea reach the FA Cup final.

The Brazilian defender is under no illusions as to how big a result our 4-2 win was against a quality Tottenham side, but was quick to point out the most important thing is to remain focused as the Blues look to extend our advantage at the top of the Premier League table when we welcome Southampton to the Bridge on Tuesday night.

With Tottenham not playing until 24 hours later, when they travel to Crystal Palace, it gives us an opportunity to apply more pressure on them by increasing our lead to seven points.

‘It was a big game, we knew it would be tough against fantastic players, but we are very happy because we won,’ said David Luiz. ‘Now we think about the next challenge, against Southampton.

‘The Premier League is a different competition, we know Spurs are a fantastic team and they won’t be too down just because they lost one game, so it will be difficult until the end.’

With his compatriot Willian slotting in seamlessly for Eden Hazard and scoring our first two goals, and Nathan Ake turning in an accomplished display alongside him at the back in the absence of Gary Cahill, David Luiz says the performance and result showed the strength of our squad.

‘Everybody belongs at this fantastic club, so it doesn’t matter who starts. Everybody has the quality to play.

‘This was a tough game, against top players in a special competition so it was a great atmosphere for everybody. At the end of the day we are happy because we won against a fantastic team.’

David Luiz also reserved words of praise for Antonio Conte, whom he has relished playing under this season.

‘He’s a fantastic person before a fantastic manager, so we talk a lot, every day, because we have a great relationship,’ he explained. ‘We try to give our best for our club and he tries to help me with his intelligence for football to improve my football so I am very happy to work with him. He did an amazing job in this game.’
