Ladies sign Sweden international

Chelsea Ladies have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season with the addition of left-sided defender Magdalena Eriksson.

A Sweden international, the 23-year-old arrives following a four-year spell at Linkopings in her home country, where she captained the club to the league title in 2016.

Eriksson, who has signed a two-year contract and will wear the No.16 shirt, said ‘I’m so excited to join Chelsea FC. The club really impressed me with its professional environment and it's the perfect step for me to develop even more as a football player.

‘I hope I can help the team to achieve even more greatness and I can't wait to be a part of the Chelsea family.’

Chelsea Ladies manager Emma Hayes added: ‘Magdalena is a top young defender who can play anywhere on the left-hand side at the back. She brings fantastic experience from her four seasons at Linkopings, two of which were as captain.

‘At the age of 23, she has already won a league title and is on the cusp of becoming a regular for the Sweden national side.

‘Magdalena is a tough defender, has a wonderful football brain and there is no doubt she will improve our squad.’

An intelligent defender, Eriksson brings experience at the highest level having played in the Champions League. She made her senior Sweden debut against France in 2014.

She is part of the Sweden squad at the European Championships, which starts this weekend in the Netherlands.
