Conference Call: The spirit of Champions

There was no better way for Antonio Conte to celebrate his 50th game in charge of the Blues than by winning at Wembley and the boss thanked his players for their efforts against the side that ran us closest last season.

Conte celebrated both our goals with his customary gusto, not least Marcos Alonso’s late winner that secured our first victory of the campaign. He was in an effusive mood afterwards and began with a message…

‘I want to thank my players, everyone, because they showed me great desire, great spirit, great will, and great heart,’ the boss said.

‘They were fighters today and for sure I saw a lot of positive things in a moment not easy for us, with suspensions and injury. Don’t forget Hazard stayed out.

‘Despite this, to play away against Tottenham and to win is a fantastic result. It’s not easy. We suffered during the game, that’s normal, but I think we showed we were dangerous in every moment. We suffered but we were ready to try to score the second goal and the third goal.

‘Don’t forget last season, after 13 wins in a row, we lost against Tottenham. Instead today, I repeat, I saw a lot of positive things.’

Conte had a message for the travelling support too

‘I also want to thank our fans because the atmosphere was incredible. It’s great to play in this type of atmosphere and our fans were very important. They tried to push us in every moment of the game, above all when we were suffering a lot.’

A tactical reshuffle saw David Luiz moved into the middle of midfield

‘David played very well. It was an amazing performance from David. He played with great experience and personality. He was a really important reference for the other players.

‘Don’t forget we played with four new players compared to last season. We changed two of our central defenders, David Luiz and Cahill, with a young player, Christensen, and then for Rudiger it was his second appearance. It’s not easy. Despite this we showed great desire to stay compact, not lose our balance, and show also to be the champions. That was very important.’

Tiemoue Bakayoko was a full debutant for the Blues and played 90 minutes

‘It was the first game for Baka. Sometimes - I was a player - and sometimes the motivation brings you to get over your physical condition if you’re not at the top. Great stadium, great opponent, great atmosphere, it brought him to have an amazing performance, but for sure he can improve, and he needs to adapt more to our style of football.’

Conte is not ready to draw any early conclusions from the opening two weekends of Premier League football

‘For us it’s very important to focus on ourselves. We know very well a lot of teams improved compared to last season. These teams were very strong last season because they invested a lot last season and also invested again this season.

‘For us it’s important to look at ourselves and to work. It’s not important if we are not favourites in this league. It was the same last season.

‘We know we are trying to improve our squad and the club is trying to do its best in the transfer market.

‘But I repeat, I am very happy: when I see this type of game, this spirit, this heart, this desire, I must be satisfied. My players gave me everything today. They did the same last season.

‘Last week we started with a half not so good against Burnley, but in the second half they showed me great spirit as we tried to change the final result. We scored goals with 10 men and then nine men.

‘We have to continue to consider there are great difficulties this season but the only way we can get through this difficulty is to work.’

His final word was for two-goal hero Alonso

‘I am not surprised [he scored]. If you remember last season he scored five or six goals, it was the same with Moses. He missed a lot of chances last season to improve his tally, but I know very well the wing-backs are the real wingers, and sometimes they must become strikers.’
