Morata’s in contention
Antonio Conte kicked off his press conference by revealing that striker Alvaro Morata is available for selection after recovering from injury…
‘Alvaro is in contention for Wednesday’s game and he has trained with us.
‘He has trained and now I’m not taking a risk if I decide to play Morata as he is back fit.
‘I could have taken a risk on Saturday and forced Morata to play against Crystal Palace but I’m not that stupid.'
Rest and recuperate
Conte explained that this is a challenging period for the squad and that he must manage the situation of his players carefully…
‘Sometimes players need to rest,’ added the boss. ‘For sure when there are injuries then it is very difficult for us.’
‘We have to do our best and be very good to overcome this situation but it is not simple when you don’t have players like Morata, [N’Golo] Kante and now [Victor] Moses.
‘I think the problem is we are always playing the same players and we have players who are not used to playing three games in a row. Sometimes you need that rest.’
The Italian is pleased we have a game so soon after the weekend defeat to Palace, as we look to get back to winning ways tomorrow night…
‘It’s a good time to play again after two defeats,’ he said.
‘To play tomorrow is very important but the Champions League is a very tough tournament and we must pay great attention to Roma because they are a good team and are doing very well.
‘They drew with Atletico Madrid and beat Qarabag. They have good players and are a very organised side, so we must pay close attention to them but for sure it is a good time for us to play again.’
An eye on the opponents
Conte also spoke about tomorrow night’s visitors to Stamford Bridge, a side he believes will offer us a real challenge…
‘Roma are a good team with fantastic players and they are very well organised, like most sides in Serie A.
‘They have a great coach who is doing well and is thinking of the club for now and for the future.
‘We must pay great attention to them.’
Praise for De Rossi
The boss also held special praise for Roma captain, Daniele De Rossi – a player he coached during his spell in charge of the Italian national side…
‘Daniele is an amazing player and a great person.
‘He has been fantastic for Roma, like [Francesco] Totti, only playing for them and is now their captain. I will always be thankful for the incredible journey we had with the national team at Euro 2016.
‘I have great appreciation and admiration for Daniele.’
