Cesar Azpilicueta and Michy Batshuayi, both scorers of important goals in yesterday’s 4-2 win over Watford, have spoken about the significance of the result for the team.
The Blues showed fantastic character and determination to come back and take all three points having trailed 2-1 midway through the second half.
Batshuayi drew us level with a superb header shortly after coming on, and then put the seal on the win with his second after Azpilicueta had made it 3-2.
‘We left it very late and we had to dig in until the last minute, but we showed great spirit,’ said Azpilicueta, whose goal was his second of the season. ‘It wasn’t our best game but we got a big victory for our confidence after three games without a win. It was important for the team to get back to winning ways.
‘We started well, we were 1-0 up and we had chances to score a second. With the last kick of the first half we then conceded a goal after a throw-in. Confidence was a bit low and then we conceded a second, but we showed great spirit and we never gave up. In the end we got the three points and it was a big win for us.’
Batshuayi’s two goals – a header and a clinical finish – took his tally to seven for the season, and he was delighted to play an important role for the team.
‘I’m staying focused, training hard and working hard,’ said the Belgian. ‘It was good because I came on the pitch and did my job by scoring two goals, the three points is good for the team.
‘I’m very happy, mostly for the three points in a difficult moment, and now we must focus on the next game.’
Azpilicueta, who started the game at right wing-back and ended it on the opposite side, hopes the result means we have now turned the corner.
‘We were three games without winning so it’s important to step up and get back to winning ways,’ he said.
‘We know it’s a long season and we will have ups and downs. This has been difficult period but this is the first step to get out and get our confidence up.’
