Conference Call: An enjoyable watch

Antonio Conte was impressed with the manner of his team’s performance as we returned to winning ways with an excellent victory in Yorkshire.

The Blues were dominant throughout and led 2-0 at the break courtesy of goals from Tiemoue Bakayoko, who the boss discussed in detail afterwards, and a rare Willian header.

Pedro curled in a fine third and even though our clean sheet was spoiled in the closing stages, Conte left Huddersfield extremely satisfied…

‘From the start we showed great personality and great desire to win this game, against a really good team,’ he said.

‘Don’t forget Huddersfield won against Manchester United, and Manchester City struggled a lot before winning in the last six minutes, so we must be very happy with the performance.

‘We have to continue trying to play this type of football, because tonight I think my players enjoyed playing this type of football, dominating the game, creating many chances with great combination play between our strikers. I enjoyed a lot seeing my players play this football.

‘I saw a lot of positive things. I also saw one negative thing, conceding the goal at the end of the game. We must improve in this aspect, because keeping a clean sheet is always important for our goalkeeper, for our defenders, for the whole team. This is the only negative aspect on a good night for us.’

Conte pointed out that the defeat at West Ham was a blip in an otherwise excellent run of league form

‘To win in this way is very important because it improves our confidence, especially after a defeat against West Ham. In the last nine games, Chelsea won seven games, drew one game away against Liverpool, and we lost the last game against West Ham.

‘This is a big win. When you play two games away against West Ham and Huddersfield, on paper, I must be honest, you think maybe West Ham will be easier than Huddersfield. Instead we lost against West Ham, and tonight we won against Huddersfield. They are a really good team with a good coach and good organisation. To win away against Huddersfield is not simple. Sometimes we make the situation easier than the expectation.

‘We are on a good path in the league, but there is a team in this moment who are very difficult to stop, otherwise we would be fighting for the title with United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool.

‘It doesn’t mean we don’t have to try to catch them, but we have to hope they have a big, big slip, and for us to win every game in this league.’

Bakayoko opened the scoring with a deft finish and Conte reviewed his performance

‘Bakayoko played a really good game. I am very happy for him. We are talking about a player who is 23 years old. He is adapting himself to our idea of football.

‘Tonight I saw the best performance from Baka. I started to see what I ask, what I want: to find the right pass between the lines, to change sides, and to be solid and focused for the whole game.

‘I am very pleased for him, and this type of performance will improve his confidence. I repeat: I am not worried about Baka. He is a young player, and now he is starting to understand he is in a club like Chelsea, a great club. I am very happy because he showed me he has the right desire and will to improve himself and try to be better.

‘If I didn’t trust him, he doesn’t start tonight in an important game after a defeat and a lot of problems. To start with him shows I trust him.’
