Callum Hudson-Odoi skippered and scored for England Under-19s, while Tariq Lamptey also netted in a big 6-2 friendly win at St George’s Park.
Both teenagers started for Keith Downing’s side, who continued their 100 per cent winning record in 2018/19 prior to the start of European Championship qualification next month.
Macedonia were the visitors to the FA’s national training centre in Staffordshire but it was the young Lions who raced into a 3-0 lead inside 40 minutes, with Hudson-Odoi netting alongside a brace from Middlesbrough’s Stephen Walker, who later completed his hat-trick. Lamptey bagged the last of the half-dozen to complete the scoring and claim his first international goal. Conor Gallagher was a second-half substitute, while Marc Guehi remained on the bench.
Earlier in the day, Juan Castillo and Daishawn Redan started for Netherlands Under-19s in their final group game of the first stage of Euro qualifying against the Republic of Ireland. Redan had scored five in the opening two games last week but could not find the net against the impressive Irish, who won 2-1 and topped Group 10.
The striker played the full game, while Castillo was replaced for the final eight minutes, though the Dutch still advance to the elite round of qualification as one of the best-performing runners-up.
In Hungary, Thierno Ballo came off the bench after 76 minutes against the hosts but could not prevent Austria’s Under-19 side from falling to a 2-1 defeat. The result means the Austrians finish third in Group 7 and miss out on the next phase of qualification.
