Sarri: We can still improve

Maurizio Sarri provided an update on player availability and stressed the need for improvement ahead of tomorrow’s big game against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian conducted his pre-match press conference in the media room at Cobham, where he addressed a range of topics, the first of which focused on injured players.

‘As usual after the international break there are some problems,’ said Sarri. ‘The most serious is with Ampadu, then we have a little problem with Hudson-Odoi and a little problem with Barkley. With Hudson-Odoi and Barkley it’s only a question of one or two days. The injury with Ampadu is serious. I don’t know how long but it’s serious. We hope to recover him in a couple of weeks.

However, there was more positive news regarding two other players

‘Rudiger has done better in the last two days, like Kovacic. I think they will be able to play.’

Eden Hazard goes into the game in fantastic form and Sarri believes he can achieve everything he wants with the Blues

Despite the fact we are unbeaten this season, Sarri says his team can still get better

‘I’m very happy with the results but we need to improve and we can improve. We’ve had no time to work, I had eight players at the beginning of August and now we’ve started to play every three days so it’s very difficult to work, improve the team and improve the players. In the future we can improve and we need to improve. We need to improve on our performances and in the defensive phase. At the moment we are giving the opponents too many opportunities.’

Jose Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge tomorrow

The Blues boss was asked if he’d been surprised by Man United’s start to the season

‘A little bit but that can happen, we are talking about eight matches, they are doing well in the Champions League and they have the opportunity to improve in the Premier League, it’s only two months.

‘Maybe player by player they have the best team in the Premier League. At the moment I think Man City are a better team but player by player they are very strong. I don’t know if they will play on us or try to play their football.’

Sarri spoke about Andreas Christensen’s involvement following comments made by his father

‘I’m not interested. What can I say? I think in the first part of the season David and Antonio have played very well so it’s not easy to change. In our last six matches Christensen has played in three so for his father the record is not important, but for us it’s important.

'He’s very young. He has to improve but he’s a technical defender so he’s suitable for me and my way of football, in the future he will be able to play more often.’

After scoring twice in as many matches, Sarri is pleased with the form of Alvaro Morata

‘In the last month Morata has played better and in the last three days he’s been very well.’

Sarri was asked for his thoughts on social media comments made towards Chelsea Women captain Karen Carney earlier this week

‘First of all I saw the last match against Fiorentina. She is a very good midfielder and she scored. In terms of the situation, what can I say? It’s not acceptable, it’s disgusting, I don’t know what else to say.

‘I think you can use social media but only for work, not for socialising. I have problems speaking to my friends on the phone because I like to speak to them face to face and have dinner. I don’t know what to say, it’s not my world.’
