PMB: Chelsea v Man City - history

This weekend's fixture is one that has thrown up some memorable matches and with the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we recall past meetings between the sides...

We Have History

Although Chelsea and Manchester City vying with each other for the Premier League crown has been an attraction over the last decade, there have been meaningful matches for decades.

Back in 1971 the pair met in an all-English semi-final of the Cup Winners’ Cup. Derek Smethurst handed the Blues the advantage early in the second half of the first leg at the Bridge. An own-goal during the return at Maine Road was enough to seal a place in the final in which Dave Sexton’s men defeated mighty Real Madrid after a replay.

Thirteen years later on the Fulham Road, a Kerry Dixon hat-trick and rarer Keith Jones finish earned a 4-1 win over the Citizens and progress in the League Cup. (The famous 4-4 quarter-final replay against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in January 1985 awaited.)

In March 1986, a Wembley crowd approaching 70,000 (the vast majority of them Chelsea fans) watched the two hammer out a nine-goal thriller in the inaugural Full Members’ Cup final, from which the Blues emerged triumphant 5-4.

In the Premier League era the Londoners have enjoyed sumptuous wins against the Mancunians: 5-0 with five different scorers in March 2003, and 6-0 including a couple from Didier Drogba in October 2007.

The Blues’ most recent victory on home soil came in April 2017 when an Eden Hazard brace to secured a 2-1 success.

Here’s a round-up of some of our finest moments against City down the years, home and away.
