N’Golo Kante and David Luiz, our two goalscorers in yesterday’s outstanding win, reflected on a job very well done with the foundations laid by a disciplined defensive display.
The pair acknowledged we had to work so hard to limit Manchester City’s renowned attacking threat, and having done that for most of the early exchanges Kante thumped us ahead on the stroke of half-time.
We were more comfortable in possession after the break and got a second through David Luiz’s cute near-post header, his first goal in over a year. The Brazilian was exemplary at the heart of our defence, not that he would admit it himself.
‘It was a great game,’ David Luiz said. ‘All the team did great.
‘You have to be honest, I think we were playing against the best team in Europe at the moment. They are together more than three years, they have great players and are playing very well.
‘We accepted we had to suffer when we had to suffer. We had a lot of humility, and then we took our chances to score. We did a different plan to try to win the match and it worked well.
‘We have trained a lot this season to try to improve. We had some bad results, but the humility was the key. We keep fighting and we keep our feet on the ground.’
Kante agreed with his team-mate regarding the quality of the opposition we faced and was delighted to have made his mark on proceedings with a fine opening goal. Maurizio Sarri complimented his and David Luiz’s performance after the game.
‘The most important thing is to give my best on the pitch,’ the Frenchman stressed.
‘I am happy when I can be on the scoresheet and to have scored my second goal of the season. Sometimes I have chances in this position to score. I reacted, got there and had a shot.
‘We had some difficult moments but we were able to suffer together and make the effort together, and after we were rewarded with two goals,’ added Kante.
‘We are happy with the win. It’s a good feeling. I think they are the best team in England. It was important to react after the defeat on Wednesday. We did it the right way and we need to continue like this in the next games.’
