England head to Russia on a high

England’s final World Cup warm-up match ended in victory with Gary Cahill and Ruben Loftus-Cheek involved for the Three Lions.

Loftus-Cheek played 78 minutes and it was he who passed to Marcus Rashford who scored a stunning 25-yarder early on.

Loftus-Cheek, deployed in the no.10 role, looked bright throughout and completed all 34 passes he attempted before his withdrawal.

By then Cahill was on the pitch, taking the captain’s armband from the substituted Jordan Henderson upon his introduction on 65 minutes.

England scored a second goal with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining through Danny Welbeck and it finished 2-0 at Elland Road. Gareth Southgate’s side are next in action in Russia, when they take on Tunisia in their World Cup opener on 18 June.

There were also Women’s World Cup qualifiers tonight and our own Erin Cuthbert was the matchwinner for Scotland, who trailed to Belarus but turned it round through close-range goals from the Chelsea striker either side of half-time. It finished 2-1 in Falkirk. Scotland are second in Group B behind Switzerland.

Elsewhere, three Blues started for Sweden who despatched Croatia 4-0 in Gothenburg. Hedvig Lindahl and Magdalena Eriksson played the full game, while Jonna Andersson was replaced on 71 minutes. The victory cements Sweden’s position at the top of Group D; they are yet to drop a point in the five matches they have played.
