Five youngsters from the Chelsea Academy have been selected by Paul Simpson as England head to Finland to defend their European Under-19 Championship title.
The young Lions begin their campaign against Turkey on Tuesday 17 July before facing Ukraine on Friday 20 July and concluding the group stage versus France next Monday 23 July. The top two from both groups will advance to the semi-finals and earn a spot at next year’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland.
From last summer’s triumphant team, both Trevoh Chalobah and Dujon Sterling return to attempt to lift the trophy for the second year in a row, while there are maiden call-ups at this age group for Conor Gallagher and Tariq Lamptey. Jamie Cumming, the goalkeeper, makes up the quintet, which is comfortably the biggest club contingent in the squad.
England have a lot to live up to after an excellent tournament 12 months ago when they won all five matches and conceded just twice on the way to claiming the crown for the first time since 1993. In qualification for the 2018 finals, Simpson's side won five of their six games, with Mason Mount the second-highest scorer.
Sky Sports will screen all England games along with the semi-final and final, starting with tomorrow’s tie against Turkey, which kicks off at 4.30pm UK time.
