Winning start for youth team

Our Under-18s got their pre-season campaign off to a winning beginning with two goals in each half securing a 4-0 victory over Oxford United last night (Monday).

A new management team oversaw the young Blues as Andy Myers took charge of his first game since being appointed as successor to Jody Morris, while Jon Harley has stepped up from working with the Under-16s to be Myers’s assistant.

Following an intense 10-day training camp in Spain, this was the first match outing for the new crop of Chelsea youngsters, who were invited to take part in the launch event for the renovated Meadowbank Stadium, home to Dorking Wanderers and the Surrey FA.

Myers selected a hybrid team of new scholars and schoolboys to ensure the full complement of his squad were tested with match minutes and it took less than half an hour for Austrian Under-17 international Thierno Ballo to open his scoring account with a composed finish after a clever headed flick-on from Armando Broja.

Andy Myers took charge of his first Under-18s game since being appointed as manager.

Ballo doubled his and the team’s tally before the break with a close-range finish before Under-16 defender Charlie Wiggett added to the advantage early in the second half. The scoring was rounded off with the best goal of the night 10 minutes from time as James Clark crashed a thumping strike in off the far post.

The youngsters return to action on Saturday morning with a Cobham fixture against Bournemouth. Before then, our development squad take on Woking tomorrow evening (Wednesday) at the Laithwaite Community Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm. Tickets can be purchased at the ground priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions, with under-16s admitted entry for free.
