Chelsea Foundation

Australia activity up and running

The men’s first team might not touchdown in Perth until Thursday but the Chelsea Foundation are already leaving their mark Down Under with a six-day community programme alongside the Australia Football Association.

Our coaches travelled to Perth at the weekend where they joined up with colleagues from Football West and the FFA ahead of the six-day programme that will include elite development and school groups, coach education sessions and will culminate with an under-8 tournament on Sunday 22 July.

In total the Foundation will deliver 39 sessions to more than 500 players in the city prior to the match against Perth Glory on Monday 23 July.

On the first day in Perth, our coaches, led by regional international development manager David Monk, delivered three sessions at Lynwood Senior High School to 86 students at the Intensive English Centre based within the school. The IEC is for children who have recently arrived in Australia.

Following on from a positive day at Lynwood High School, Football West - the state governing body for association football in Western Australia - and the Foundation hosted a free grassroots coach education workshop and practical demonstration for coaches and teachers from across Perth.

Monk said: ‘For our second visit to Australia we have officially been welcomed with open arms by football fans, schools, clubs and coaches alike.

‘Football West have provided us with opportunities to go directly into high schools and deliver a true Chelsea FC experience to hundreds of students throughout our visit.

‘Our first coach education workshop focused on grassroots development for youth players and with more than 75 coaches in attendance the buzz around the game next week here in Perth was fully evident.

‘I would personally like to thank Football West and all the players and coaches we’re working with for the great reception we’ve had thus far and we look forward to the events during the tour.’
