On Loan

Kovacic's exciting challenge

After completing his season-long loan move to the Blues from Real Madrid, Mateo Kovacic spoke to Chelsea TV to discuss swapping La Liga for the Premier League.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who was part of the Croatia squad which reached the World Cup final last month, where they were beaten by France, looked forward to playing alongside his new team-mates, proving himself and helping the team win trophies

You can read the full transcript of Kovacic’s first interview below.

Hi Mateo, welcome to Chelsea! What an interesting summer it’s been for you, firstly with the World Cup and now this…

Yes, thank you. I’m very excited to be at Chelsea, it’s an amazing feeling. The World Cup was great for England but Croatia did well. I will try to do my best for this club.

You’ll have to make friends again with N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud…

Yes, I want to wish them all the best for the new season with us together. I want us to play good football, I will come straight here to show my best and for me that’s the most important thing.

You and N’Golo will maybe play together in midfield – what type of midfielder are you?

It will be nice to play with him of course but there is a coach to pick the side and I need to give my best to prove myself. To talk about myself is difficult, I don’t like to talk about myself.

You’ve played against Jorginho before and now you’ll play with him…

Yes, I played against him. He’s an amazing player. He was with Verona and then Napoli and now we are together at Chelsea. I’m excited to play with him and I think we will enjoy it together on the pitch.

New coach, new midfield, new formation, new goalkeeper – it should be a very exciting season ahead…

Yes, for me it’s exciting because everything is new. It’s a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I’m sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me so I’m really excited and really happy. I’m looking forward to a great season.

You enjoyed a lot of success at Real Madrid. Will it be more difficult to win things here than in Spain?

For sure, but I think this team has won a lot in the last years, so I’m coming to a team who are used to winning all the time. I’m happy to be at Chelsea, it’s a great club, an amazing city and like I said before I will give my best for the team. I want to say a huge than you to Chelsea for giving me this opportunity.

Did you speak to Luka Modric about London and the Premier League?

Yes, I speak to Luka always. He’s very happy for me but he’s sad that I’m leaving [Madrid] because we are very close. He said London is an amazing city but I knew that before.

He said the Premier League will be tough in the beginning but that it’s a nice league with amazing football, where the stadiums are always full, and that I will enjoy it.

How much work have you been doing in pre-season? Are you ready to play?

I will try to do my best. I haven’t trained a lot in Madrid because I wanted to come to Chelsea so I haven’t had too many training sessions, but I will do my best to be ready soon.
