Ross Barkley has praised his two fellow midfielders, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, in the wake of Saturday’s 3-0 opening-day win at Huddersfield.
In Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 system, it was the trio selected in the centre of the park, with Jorginho operating at the base, Barkley on the left and Kante, in a slightly more advanced position than usual, on the right.
All three players performed well, with the Blues controlling the game comfortably after racing into a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Kante volley and a Jorginho penalty, and Barkley highlighted how the way we are set up allows one of the midfielders to get forward.
‘With the system that we’re playing now it gives one of the three midfielders license to get into the box, N’Golo was in there against Huddersfield and got the goal,’ he said.
Barkley went on to speak about Jorginho’s role in the team after our new signing produced a fine display on his Premier League debut.
‘He’s pivotal to the way we play,’ said Barkley. ‘He’s a real top-quality player, he gets on the ball, gets us playing and against Huddersfield you could see that’s the way it’s going to be this season.’
On a personal level, Barkley was pleased to start having been heavily involved during the pre-season campaign, and he hopes he did enough to impress Sarri and remain in the side.
‘That depends on how I perform and hopefully I showed I can start and stay in his thoughts,’ he said. ‘There’s a lot of competition at top sides like us so my focus is just to do what I can on the pitch and help the team win games.’
