In our latest round-up of the loan highlights, strikers have been among the goals…
In the Premier League over the past week, Michy Batshuayi could not prevent Crystal Palace losing 3-1 to Manchester United in midweek, but helped them bounce straight back by scoring for the second time in eight days, sweeping in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross for the Eagles’ second goal in a 3-1 win at Burnley on Saturday.
Kurt Zouma was part of the Everton defence which yesterday kept Liverpool at bay at Goodison to dent their city rivals championship challenge. The result was 0-0. Zouma made a game-high seven clearances for the Toffees as they kept the Reds at bay.
In the Spanish top flight, Alvaro Morata scored two headers in quick succession for Atletico Madrid who beat Real Sociedad and are seven points behind leaders Barcelona. Morata’s goals came in the first half of a 2-0 win with Atletico maintaining their clean sheet despite being reduced to 10 men after an hour when Koke was sent off.
Mario Pasalic came on late in Atalanta’s Serie A win over Fiorentina on Sunday. All the goals in a 3-1 home victory had been scored by the time the attacking midfielder was introduced. Earlier in the week he contributed to a six-goal thriller in the first leg of Atalanta’s Coppa Italia semi-final against Fiorentina, getting La Dea’s second of a 3-3 draw. They are well placed thanks to the away-goals rule ahead of the second leg in Bergamo on 24 April.
In the other semi-final, Tiemoue Bakayoko and AC Milan were held to a 0-0 draw at Lazio, before beating 10-man Sassuolo 1-0 in Serie A on Saturday.
Eduardo and Jake Clarke-Salter both started for Vitesse Arnhem as the Dutch side recovered from conceding the first goal to beat NAC Breda 4-1. In the second tier, Fankaty Dabo helped Sparta Rotterdam beat Waalwijk 2-1 on Friday.
In a goal-packed week for Fenerbahce, Victor Moses scored an 84th-minute winner from the penalty spot as the Turkish side beat Rizespor 3-2 on Saturday, having already drawn 3-3 with Besiktas in an Istanbul derby last Monday.
Cercle Bruges lost 2-1 at Kortrijk in Belgium with Kylian Hazard in their line-up.
In the English Football League Championship, Tammy Abraham contributed to three of Aston Villa’s goals as they won 4-0 against Derby County. The rebound from his saved shot was turned in for the opener, before Abraham converted a cross to grab the second himself. The striker then set up another goal in the second half. Fikayo Tomori was in that Derby side and the result completed a disappointing week on the road for the Rams, having also lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest last Monday.
Hull City returned to winning ways, with Todd Kane providing the cross for the decisive goal as they beat Millwall 2-1, before also helping them defeat Birmingham City 2-0 at the weekend.
Matt Miazga and Lewis Baker featured throughout as Reading kept themselves out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at an Ipswich Town side which included Trevoh Chalobah. Wigan Athletic, with Reece James in their team, held Middlesbrough to a 0-0 draw and Izzy Brown made his first appearance of the season, coming on as a late substitute for Leeds United in their 1-0 loss at Queens Park Rangers.
There was a win for Michael Hector and Sheffield Wednesday midweek. They defeated Brentford 2-0. Tomas Kalas, Jay Dasilva and Kasey Palmer all started Bristol City’s midweek 2-1 loss to Birmingham, but only Kalas also began their 1-1 draw at Preston North End on Saturday, with Dasilva coming off the bench.
In League One, Bradley Collins kept a clean sheet as Burton Albion drew 0-0 with Walsall, the goalkeeper making a particularly fine save from close range late on. There was a win for Dujon Sterling as Coventry City kept themselves in play-off contention with a 1-0 win at Accrington Stanley.
It was an eventful Saturday for Nathan Baxter in League Two with Yeovil Town, the Glovers scoring a dramatic late winner to earn what could be a crucial three points against fellow relegation battlers Morecambe, taking them six-points clear of the drop zone. Jacob Maddox suffered a 4-2 defeat with Cheltenham Town, away at Mansfield Town.
Jared Thompson played in goal as Warrenpoint Town reached the semi-finals of the Irish Cup with a 3-1 win over Larne Tech Old Boys. They play Ballinamallard United in the semi-finals at the end of the month.
