Our last home game against Dynamo Kiev was settled by a brilliant Willian set-piece, so what better time to have a look at our formidable recent record from direct free-kicks.
You can watch all 20 goals we have netted in that fashion since the start of the 2015/16 campaign above. That figure is six more than any other Premier League team has managed in all competitions in the same period of time. Manchester United (14), West Ham (12) and Manchester City (10) are next.
Willian, who of course burst onto the scene in Europe with his performances for Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, is responsible for exactly half of the 20. He recalled to this website his performance and free-kick against Dynamo Kiev three-and-a-half years ago being among the best of his Chelsea career during a period when he was in an extraordinarily rich vein of form. He scored six direct free-kicks for us between September and November 2015.
More recently, Willian’s free-kick against Vidi in Hungary in December was one of three we have found the net with in the Europa League this season. Olivier Giroud in the same game, and Ross Barkley in our last European outing, against Malmo, are the others.
In total eight different players have scored direct from a dead ball since August 2015, starting with Oscar on the opening day of that season. After Willian, Marcos Alonso has had the most success with four goals. The remaining six players have all scored once.
Just reading through that list and watching the video at the top evokes memories of some of the best goals we have scored in recent times, and here's hoping we maintain this eye-catching record...
