Maurizio Sarri pleased with win over Dynamo Kiev but warns against complacency, and also discusses Callum Hudson-Odoi

Maurizio Sarri gave his reaction to tonight’s 3-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League, praised the performance of Pedro and explained what is important for Callum Hudson-Odoi’s development now.

The 18-year-old came off the bench to finish the scoring tonight after the two wingers who started, Pedro and Willian, had netted in either half.

At the midway stage of this round of 16 tie Chelsea are in a strong position, but Sarri is certainly not taking anything for granted ahead of next week’s trip to Ukraine…

‘The result is a good result,’ he said. ‘We were able to not concede, and to not concede a goal at home is very important in this competition. We could have scored more, especially in the first half.

‘Now we have to be careful. We have to go there with a very good level of application and determination if we want to qualify.

‘If you concede a goal you can go mentally in trouble. We have to go there with the right level of attention.’

Pedro opened the scoring and could have added to his tally on a number of occasions

‘He played very well, also in the defensive phase. He missed two or three goals but he played a very good match.’

Hudson-Odoi came off the bench to net his third Europa League goal of the season

‘He does not have to do anything to convince me. He is a very great player. I have my opinion. In my opinion, a player at 18 years old cannot be at the top. He needs to improve until he is 22 or 23.

‘Now he needs to improve without the pressure of the media, the fans and the club, but he is in my mind for every match.

‘To have pressure when you are 18 is very dangerous for a player. You can lose [sight of] the target. When you are 18 the target is to improve tactically, mentally and physically. I don’t like to speak about him for this reason.’
