In our look at the latest Chelsea-related news stories from the media, Petr Cech sends a reminder of his Premier League record for clean sheets in a season, Dynamo Kiev manager Aleksandr Khatskevich speaks ahead of his side’s Europa League visit to Stamford Bridge and AC Milan set their price for Alessio Romagnoli.
Cech sends record reminder
Petr Cech is set to call time on his career at the end of the season but the Arsenal goalkeeper has reminded us of a magnificent record he set with Chelsea 14 years ago with a cheeky response to an official tweet from the Premier League.
According to The Daily Mail, the Premier League posted on its Twitter account that Alisson’s 17 clean sheets for Liverpool this season are the most by a goalkeeper in their debut Premier League season since Jose Reina had 20 in 2005/06.
However, Reina’s mark is not a league record as it still well short of what Cech achieved with the Blues a year earlier in 2004/05.
‘I know one guy who had 24CL in his debut EPL season…’ responded Cech with accompanying emojis of a laughing face and a person putting up his hand.
The Premier League responded shortly afterwards, writing: ‘So do we... and he's still top of this list!' and including a list of the players who have kept the most clean sheets in a Premier League season, with Cech on top with 24, Edwin van der Sar second with 21 for Manchester United in 2008/09 and Reina sharing third place with Peter Schmeichel on 20.
While Cech’s record is not entirely safe, Alisson would need to keep clean sheets in seven of Liverpool’s last nine games to equal his mark.
The odds are still 50-50: Dynamo Kiev manager
Dynamo Kiev manager Aleksandr Khatskevich is not saying too much about his side’s chances of getting through their Europa League round of 16 clash against Chelsea although he feels that his side are starting on an equal footing with the Blues.
‘Before the start of each match, I think that the odds are always 50-50,’ said Khatskevich during his team’s pre-match press conference in London on Wednesday.
‘Moreover, this is a two-legged tie so let’s see what happens tomorrow first.’
Dynamo will be without Spanish striker Fran Sol, who has a shoulder injury, while Slovenian winger Benjamin Verbic is suspended for accumulating three yellow cards. However, Khatskevich is not planning on making any major tactical adjustments for the first leg at Stamford Bridge.
‘We will not be changing our game plan. Nazariy Rusyn will play in attack, and we will decide who replaces Verbic tomorrow,’ he said.
Milan set price for Romagnoli
Citing a report in La Gazzeta dello Sport, Calcio Mercato is suggesting that AC Milan have set a value their captain Alessio Romagnoli, who has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Juventus.
According to the report, the 24-year-old defender is valued at around €60 million by the Rossoneri and while the price appears steep, it may not deter possible suitors for his services at the end of the season, even if Milan qualify for next season’s Champions League.
