Chelsea new boy Christian Pulisic made the difference for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, coming off the bench to score one and make one in their 3-1 win against Stuttgart.
Pulisic was introduced in the second half with the score at 1-1, but set up Paco Alcacer with six minutes remaining to put Dortmund in front before securing all three points with an injury-time finish of his own, slotting home with his left foot from inside the area.
It was quite some impact for the American, who only entered the action with 11 minutes remaining and Dortmund about to fall two points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table.
Despite the win, Pulisic and his team-mates were knocked off top spot in Germany’s top flight after Bayern Munich’s 6-0 win over Wolfsburg put them ahead on goal difference.
Saturday’s strike was Pulisic’s second since signing for Chelsea and being loaned back to Dortmund at the beginning of 2019.
The US international also appeared from the bench during Dortmund’s midweek Champions League defeat at home to Tottenham, which saw them eliminated from the competition. He had missed two weeks prior to that with a thigh strain.
Dortmund are next in action away to Hertha Berlin, who count former Blue Salomon Kalou among their squad, next Saturday.
They then host Wolfsburg before travelling to the Allianz Arena, scene of our 2012 Champions League victory (and Kalou’s last Chelsea appearance) in what may prove to be a title decider against Bayern.
Pulisic will be hoping he can play a key role in the run-in before he heads to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
