With the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we look back on some past encounters with this weekend's opponents...
We Have History
Chelsea have won 11 of our past 13 league meetings with Cardiff, including all three in the Premier League.
This is only our second visit there of the Premier League era, however. The first was the final game of the 2013/14 season when Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side had already been relegated.
The Blues went behind to a deflected Craig Bellamy shot eventually credited to Cesar Azpilicueta, but recovered through Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres to carry all three points back across the Severn Bridge. That was the Spain striker’s last appearance for the Blues, as it was for Mark Schwarzer and the legendary Ashley Cole. Enjoy the highlights here.
The Londoners’ only defeat in 56 years against Cardiff was at Stamford Bridge in April 1981 when Geoff Hurst was in charge. Gary Stevens scored the only goal just after the break.
The Welsh side’s most recent victory against Chelsea in any competition came at Ninian Park in the League Cup back in October 1986 (2-1).
Chelsea full-back Tommy Law, famous for his sliding tackle technique, was part of Scotland’s ‘Wembley Wizards’ who beat England 5-1 on 31 Mar 1928. Teammates Hugh Gallacher and hat-trick hero Alec Jackson later joined the Pensioners too.
