Michael Essien is the latest Chelsea legend to add his name to the list for the Soccer Aid for Unicef match at Stamford Bridge in June.
Essien will join former team-mates Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho in competing for the Soccer Aid World XI against Joe Cole’s England XI on Sunday 16 June, returning to play at the stadium he called home for nine years.
Esssien, who scored 25 times in 256 Chelsea appearances between 2005 and 2014, said: ‘It is a joy to be returning to Chelsea and play in front of a big crowd at Stamford Bridge – it feels like I’m coming home! The Soccer Aid World XI is looking strong, especially with my old team-mates Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho. It is a privilege to be able to play in Soccer Aid for Unicef and help children in danger around the world.’
Other stars lined up to play in the contest include athletes Usain Bolt and Sir Mo Farah, pop star Niall Horan and former England midfielder and Frank Lampard’s cousin, Jamie Redknapp. His father, Harry, will be managing the England team alongside TV presenter Susanna Reid, while Sam Allardyce and Piers Morgan are bossing the World XI team.
Tickets for Soccer Aid for Unicef 2019, which takes place on Sunday 16 June, are available now. Prices begin at £10 for under-16s and £20 for adults, meaning a family of four can attend for £60.
