Fikayo Tomori, the defender who is spending a season on-loan at Derby County, has been voted their Player of the Season by supporters of the Championship club.
The 21-year-old, who came through the Chelsea Academy from Under-8 level upwards and won the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League before making his senior Blues debut on the final day of the 2015/16 season against Leicester City, has made 49 appearances for Derby in all competitions this season, and has helped them into their current position in one of the promotion play-off positions with three games to play. They are sixth.
‘I came here on loan so I was not expecting to win this, I just came to do my best,’ said Tomori after collecting his Player of the Season award. He has previously been Chelsea Academy Player of the Year.
‘I’m just glad the fans recognised that I was trying to give my best and hopefully I can continue that for the rest of the season and we can get into the play-offs and get into the Premier League.’
He also spoke about achieving more appearances than in during previous loans, about establishing himself as a centre-back, and about a song the Rams’ fans have adopted for him – ‘You’ll never beat Tomori!’
‘I try not to let it sink into my head because otherwise I may lose concentration but it is nice to hear,’ he said.
At Derby, Tomori has worked under the management of Frank Lampard and his assistant Jody Morris and played with another Chelsea loan player, midfielder Mason Mount.
They visit one of their rivals for a play-off place, Bristol City, this Saturday before finishing with games at Swansea City and at home to West Bromwich Albion.
