Eden Hazard described the Europa League as a great trophy to have captured having been a central figure in a second-half performance that swept Arsenal away in Azerbaijan. He also spoke more about what is to come for him following the 4-1 win.
The Belgian star supplied the pass from which Pedro gave us a 2-0 lead after Olivier Giroud had opened the scoring and then was among the goals himself, one from the penalty spot, the other when he swept home a Giroud ball. Having missed out on the 2013 win due to injury, it was truly a special occasion for him.
Speaking on the pitch shortly after the final whistle in Baku, Hazard said:
‘It was good. In the first half I think both teams had a bit of stress because it was the final, it is something big for both teams, but when Oli scored it was the beginning of a great night. We played well second half, they had a few chances at the end when the score was 4-1 but we controlled the game. I am just happy to lift this trophy with the boys.
‘We know we have the players when we want play all together, fight all together. Today we showed this mentality and for the boys, for the manager, the fans and the staff, it is a great trophy to win.’
Our no.10 was pressed on when there would be news on his future.
‘I don’t know yet, I think we will decide in a few days,’ he replied. ‘My target today was to win the trophy, that was it, that was the only thing on my mind.
‘I told my decision two weeks ago and now it depends on the club, both clubs. I am just waiting like the fans wait so you will see, you will know in a couple of days.
‘I think it is a goodbye but in football you never know. My dream was to play in the Premier League, I did this for seven years with one of the biggest clubs in the world so now maybe it is time for a new challenge.’
